"Thomas Jefferson, the author of the Declaration of American Independence and the Statute of Virginia for Religious Freedom and father of the University of Virginia, served his country for five and a half decades as legislator, Governor, diplomat, cabinet member, Vice President, and President. He wrote the university's charter and led the legislative campaign for its enactment, secured the University's location, designed its buildings to create the academical village, planned its curriculum, and served as the first rector when the University opened for classes in 1825. This statue of Mr. Jefferson surveying the site for the University of Virginia was a gift from the Class of 1974. 2007 Eugene Daub, Rob Firmin, and Jonah Hendrickson Sculptors."
