More About Sędziszów

Audra Lemke Wed, Jun 11, 10:51 AM (21 hours ago) to me Fun facts about Sedziszow…. There are two of them in Poland. Sedziszow and Sedziszow Malopolski. Looking at a map, they are in completely different locations, one closer to Ukraine. The Yiddish name for Sędziszów was Shendishov (which is how my mom said my Grandma Jean pronounced it, actually more like Shendishev?). These ancestry pages seem to show Jean living in Sędziszów Malopolski. My grandmother always called herself Austrian, not Polish. It was part of the Austrian empire but borders changed before she even came to America. ===== I found a 2014 email I had sent to my mom, but she never answered

"Mom, how did your mom pronounce her town’s name again? Is it possibly this one: Shendeshov or Sendishev or Sendeshov These are alternate yiddish names of a town that was part of the Austrian Empire prior to WWI (in area Galicia), then ended up part of Poland (now called Sędziszów or maybe Sędziszów Małopolski, Poland). It would explain why your mom considered herself Austrian when the name doesn’t sound Austrian. This shows the change of country for this town, before the WWs and afterwards (mentions alternate names of Sendeshov [Yid], Sendziszov, Shendeshov, Sendishev): http://data.jewishgen.org/wconnect/wc.dll?jg~jgsys~jgcd (http://data.jewishgen.org/wconnect/wc.dll?jg~jgsys~jgcd) http://jewishwebindex.com/Galicia.htm (http://jewishwebindex.com/Galicia.htm) ("Sedziszow (pronounced sehn zhee shuff) (Sedziszow Malopolski, Sendeshov, Sendishev, Sendziszov, Shendeshov) Located near Ropczyce and just west of Rzeszow.") http://www.iajgsjewishcemeteryproject.org/poland/sedziszow-makopolski.html (http://www.iajgsjewishcemeteryproject.org/poland/sedziszow-makopolski.html) ("Alternate Yiddish names: Sendeshov and Shendeshov")"
