Scanning Issues

I wondered why I could't operate the HP Scanner that I bought from a UVM student a couple of years ago. It turns out that the HP-Director won't work on the latest (10.7.5,6) OS. But it took a while to find out the reason. Built in software on the Mac can operate the scanner. So even though we got a Canon copier/printer/scanner, I still wanted to see if I could make the HP work, partly because it has a larger bed and just to see if I could do it.
The images above were from my tests. The cat is a birthday card from Carl and Les with the words to Charles Lloyd's Tagi transcribed on a sheet of paper. I wanted to see if I could use the OCR that seems to be packaged with the Canon to recognize the words in an image that I scanned using the HP. Maybe.
It's a good thing Saul and Laura are coming up tonight through the winter storm alert weather. I'm sure they will want to play with the system after coffee in the morning.

Adele and the Turkey

We were on our way to the Harpoon Point to Point Ride for the Vermont Foodbank. One bold bird emerged from a gaggle of slow turkeys in the passing lane. He flew right across our path and Adele did not brake or swerve. It was like watching on TV. I didn't even flinch as the large body smacked the passenger side windshield. Small shards of glass rained down.

We decided it would be a good idea to stop and call the police. Could we keep drivng? Was that the turkey back on the side of the road? This picturial essay captures the event.

The sketch was done by his daughter Mae Pepis. Mae also did a sketch of Frieda (Fanny) Kreinik, her mother and my great-grandmother.

I got the sketches from Max Ellen, widower of my cousin Leslie Tamases Ellen, from their apartment in New York. We tried to scan the image and ripped the sketch paper in the lower left. I offered to get it repaired, and Max said to just take the sketches in their frames.

I got in touch with some Pepis relatives. Aaron Pepis is a photographer living in upstate New York. Mae's son Saul Pepis lives in California.

When we were in Charlottesville visiting Linda Childs, we took her grandkids over to UVA's Darden Graduate School of Business to see Jonah's work.

What does the plaque say?

Saw your note online with the photo of your father's Siata-Chrysler and  thought you might be interested in seeing the attached file of the car's  history, as I've been able to collect it thus far. If you can add any  details, anything at all, please do so. I'm particularly curious as to how  he came to own the car, i.e. from whom, when, etc.
The propaganda below will help explain my interest ... in addition to the  fact that I own three Siatas from the same time period ... and my father  several more.
I'll try to locate a couple of more recent photos of your father's car, but  it will have to wait until I return from a 2 week trip.

I am still working in earnest on a new edition of the Italian Car Registry,  starting with a volume on "A" cars (Abarth, AC (Frua, Zagato, etc.), Alfa  Romeo, Allemano, Ansaldo, Arnolt MG, Arnolt Bristol, ASA, Aston Martin  (Allemano, Bertone Touring, Zagato), Atlas/Allied, ATS, Aurea, Autobianchi,  etc.). This edition will be greatly expanded from the 1994 edition, adding  photos, text and much more information about the histories of most of the cars.
There is a huge increase in the information I've collected about Abarth,  Alfa Romeo, and Arnolt cars in particular. I am also sharing more detailed  information about each car (when that information is known) than that which  appeared in the 1994 edition.

Alfa Romeo 1959 Colorized

This was Norman Jacobowitz's first Alfa Romeo Veloce. It had an aftermarket fibreglas hard top. Over several years it was modified for racing, eventually taking the 1500cc class at Bonneville Salt Flats in 1960. There is a recording of the record run. Thanks to Bob Immler for the copy of the second track.

Norm took David and Ira on a cross country trip in our Plymouth wagon towing the Alfa.

Firestone tires. What else do I remember?

The car was originally white. Jay added the red after Norm later got a red Veloce. I bought it from a grad student in Chapel Hill in 1970 when I got back from California.

Bunny and Bea in Brooklyn - 2010

I visited Bea and Bunny Jacoby in their new Brooklyn assisted living apartment. Eli came over and set up my computer to record our conversation. I got about an hour of these delightful people. Devoted to each other, working through the vicissitudes of aging. Bunny turned 93 on Wednesday, December 15, 2010.

Bunny is Bernard Jacoby, the grandson of Bernath Jacobowitz, who is the brother of my great-grandfather, Wolf Jacobowitz. We were both amazed that the Jersey City Jacobowitzes didn't socialize with the Brooklyn Jacobys, Jacobis, and Jacobses. Wonder why.

Skype Video Call to Jiri

It is Sunday Noveber 7, 2010, right after daylight savings time was over in Eastern Time in the US.
Sao Paolo, usually two hours ahead of us, is now three hours ahead. Beth Jacoby in Chicago and Ellen Ruby in Sag Harbor, NY, and I had planned to do a Skype conference call with Jiri in Sao Paolo at 11 am Eastern Time.

At 9 am I came up to arrange to record the session with SkypeCap, now IMCapture.

But Jiri was already on line. So I made the connection and we starred to talk. It was amazing to see him, an 86-year-old concentration camp survivor looking pretty good; cheery and animated. He said that he had suffered a bout of cancer and recently had chemo- and radio-therapy. This may explain why he had not been so energetic in recent months in returning email and Geni messages. But recently he stepped up his contribution. He sent a report of the times from 1945-1946, which I "translated" and will paste here. Then I'll add some notes from our Skype conversation (in parentheses) to fill in details.

I wish Beth Jacoby and Ellen Ruby had been in on the call. They would have remembered details that I didn't get.

Jiri refers to his grandmother as Fancsi-Mama. Hungarian names are rendered Last First, as in Klein Blanka (Jiri's mother) and Klein Moric (her father).

Jiri said that he visited Sobrance, Hummene, and other family towns with the son of his brother Andy's best friend, Lewis Kovac. The name had been changed from Klein to Kovacs. Lewis is the cousin who traveled with Jiri in 2006 and who now lives in Los Angeles. This was in the context of a story about Jiri's granddaughter Barbara, who underwent a liver transplant at Cedar Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles. The organization that supported this medical work and other good works was supported by Steven Spielberg, Barbra Streisand and other well-known people in entertainment.

Jiri's son Josef died at age 48 of cancer. He was a mathematician who was supervising and organizing high school math teachers. Where was this? Jiri's father is also names Josef, so there was a bit of confusion in identifying the two Josefs (grandfather and grandson) in Geni.

Report on the years 1945-1946 : Sent by Jiri Jacobowitz on November 2, 2010, via email.

RETURN TO UNGVÁR:
1- Jiri's brother Andy returned to Ungvár in December, 1945. Since 1943 he had been engaged with the Russian Army in the Hungarian Partisan Group

2- January 1945 - Erzsi, Vera and Ani - In April, 1944, Erzsi, Vera and Ani had been deported to Auschwitz, and a few days after that they were transferred to a little KZ Camp in East of Poland, where the Soviet Army arrived in December, 1944.

Auschwitz and Buchenwald
3- June 1945 - Jiri and Robi had been deported in April of 1944 to Auschwitz, and after 5 days (Jiri was) transferred to Buchenwald, which camp was liberated on April 11, 1945. (Jiri was selected by Dr Mengele because he was young and strong and could work. Jiri's left arm is shorter than his left by 10 cm. He showed me on Skype video.) As the war ended only in May, it took about 50 days for them to make it finally to Ungvár.

OUT FROM SOVIET:
1- 2 months later I decided to move to Czechoslovakia, accompanid by my 3 cousins (Erzsi, Vera, Ani? ) and Nuszen (Nussen Horovitz, who in the meantime had married Erzsi.
We were without money and identification cards. In Prague I found some Ungvárian friends and they recomended that we move to Podmokly, where lot of Jews (mostly from Karpats) were already living. So it was easy to get a job. Robi moved in with his uncle Zoltán Weissberger (aunt Viola's brother, with whom he moved some months later to Israel and my brother (Andy) remained in Ungvár.

Czechoslovakia - So we immediaely moved to Podmokly and start to work. It was not so easy, but the local government was helping the survivers,

But each month the Soviet Government and Army made all the decisions and it was clear for me what will happen in the coming years.

USA or BRAZIL.
So, we decide to try to emigrate USA or Brazil. Since the process to get an American visa was complicated, we decide on Brazil. First we all needed an invitation from a Brazilian, with a lot of guaranties. Uncle Hermann sent for all of us, including Andy and Robi.

Than we needed passports. It was very, very difficult. From my mother's family I have a cousin who was one of the great heros in the Czechoslovakian Army, and one of General Svoboda's assistants. Since we were really very young, without home and family, he was helpful in obtaining the passports.

Problems with Tickets:
And after all, the problem with the tickets.
In the meantime we was already seven, as Ezsi in February, 1946 gave birth to a boy, who is today Dr. JOSÉ HOROVITZ, I went to the Joint in Prague, (The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee) and they asked for a initial payment of US$1,000.00, which uncle Arnold and Hermann fulfilled, I think 50/50.

The Brazilian visas, no problems. Finaly we receied from JOINT, Prague, information that we are booked to Rio de Janeiro, on "S/S Jamaique", AND HAD TO LIVE IMMEDIATELY TO JOINT in Prague. As everything that we have in the apartment, belonged to the government, we needed some money for the railway tickets to Prague.

Paris
JOINT provided some money for traveling expenses to Paris. When we arrived to Paris, a vsry bad news: "JAMAIQUE" was fully occupied AND WE MUST WAITE in Paris the eime that they nees to arrange an other vessel. And once more provide us with some money for local expenses. It was very difficult for us, specialy because of 7-month-old José. The time was running out, and our visas were expiring. Finally, after 3 weeks, they told us that they had arranged a Brazilian charger "ALMIRANTE ALEXANDRINO" but this one is booked from GENEVA, ITALY (Genoa, I think. DJ). So, we went by train Genoa, where we waited over one week, up to the beginning of November, 1946.

Thwew in Genoa, wirhout any assistance from Joint or any other congregation.
The Brazilian vessel was horrible, one side with about 499 women, and the other side with 499 men...
During the 35 days, horrible conditions, no bath, no food., etc. But finally we arrived in Rio, where we were expected by Uncle Hermann, Aunt Dora and Irion.

Today I'm convinced that without Uncle Arnold's intervention with Joint, we would have had to wait weeks or months in Genoa, while our Brazilian visas expired ,,,, Because that was reswlling our reserved tickets with great "OVERPRICES"

So, as you say, Uncle Arnold was not rich, BUT R E S P E C T E D !

And I can imagine how difficult the trip was for Chava, Wolf and Bernath's family, with so many children!

Why yes. These folks were getting married in an hour at the Tree House, a handicapped-accessible tree house just on the other side of Oakledge Park in Burlington.

The ritual of the prenuptial photo session is what I was interested in. These folks really caught my eye. Wish them well.

Stop Signs Could Be Replaced By Yields

There is a large STOP sign for traffic exiting the Entomology Station. The smaller stop signs on the Rec Path could be replaced with Yield signs, since the bikes, runners, and pedestrians are the higher volume of traffic, and the exiting cars have to stop before entering Spear Street turning right or left. Traffic entering the Entomology Station have good views of approaching bikes and runners on the path.

I saw a bike heading south (downhill from the left) when I was taking this photo. He pulled to his left to get a look around the corner and to be seen, slowed, and then rolled through the small stop sign when he saw that the intersection was clear. This behavior seems appropriate and would be recognized as legitimate if we put small yield signs for the path users,

Bob Schermer volunteers at the Food Bank. Each year the Harpoon Point-to-Point ride serves as their major fundraiser. Bob's sons-in-laws and friends ride. I rode to the start in Williston, but accepted a van ride from Bethel to Barnard (big hot hill, cramping), so I wound up riding 175 kilometers = 108 miles.

Intersection Intervention Misfires

Today we tried an intersection intervention like some in Burlington. We targeted Staples Plaza eastbound. There was a kind of group-think going on in the planning of it. Although Todd LeBlanc, South Burlington Police, clearly indicated that he would be targeting cars, nobody thought to question the wisdom of stopping all the cars trying to get out of Burlington at rush hour to give them a flyer about sharing the road with bikes and pedestrians. It just pissed them off. Some just weren't sure why they were being held up.

Rick did get to talk to some bicyclists, and that seemed worthwhile, but the wholesale distribution to every motor vehicle was a bad idea.

At least Jason figured it out after only 15 minutes, and we called off the intervention.
We will re-think the concept and clarify our goals of meeting a balanced group of motorists, bicyclists and walkers. Somewhere else.

We were pleased to discover that there is still access from Meadowbrook to the UVM cross-country course. The connection can be found at the top of the drive loop between the F and H units.

If you turn east you can follow the running course as it turns south and exits at the recreation path.

North Union at Pearl Detail

The bike lane on Union does not end before the intersection with Pearl Street. There is not enough room to the left for cars to keep out of the bike lane, and there is no room for bikes to 'filter forward,' which would put the bikes in the car's blind spot for right turns.

The dark van is going straight. He is straddling the line delineating the left-turn-only lane. There is not enough room for a car lane between the LTO marking and the bike lane stripe (not seen here, but underneath the cars on the right.)
You can see the bike lane stripe here as through traffic straddles it, being forced into the bike lane by the positions of the cars in the left-turn-only lane to the left.

North Union at Pearl Street, Burlington

North of the Pearl Street intersection, a car driver stops to chat with a friend. This makes it difficult for cars to pass and a real problem for bikes.

This bike is in the left-turn-only lane, and he waited for the light to turn before taking a proper left. He was the only bike I saw using this intersection on Thursday at drive time.

There is a left turn only lane on the west side of this intersection, but half of it is marked as OK for parking. There is only one slot at the north for a left-turning car.

At the corner of Pearl Street, North Union is one-way north. The bike lane continues all the way to the intersection, which encourages bikes to 'filter' up to the light, and it puts them in a blind spot for cars attempting to turn right onto Pearl.

For our 45th reunion (class of 1965) Pargy and I decided to join the Alumni Bike Ride organized by Dan Tieger and the Bicycle Club Kingston under the leadership of Jim King. Jim coaches the Bard cycling team. Who knew there was such a thing?

We negotiated a detour for a closed bridge on 9G and arrived on campus behind Ludlow just about quarter of 10. There were a couple of other alumns and SOs.

When we got back to campus, we rolled up Annandale Road where the procession was forming up. We both felt tired and spacey. The day was perfect -- a cloud cover, warm, but not too warm, with mostly friendly fellow road users. The back roads north of Red Hook are great. There are some good climbs on the way to Lake Taghkanic. On the way back Pargy opted to go over Turkey Hill, which he said wasn't much worse than what we had already ridden, and not a tough as the hills around Monterey, where he lives.

For the first session on Wednesday May 19th, Charlene, Adele, Mark and I rode up to the Mansfied Ave offices where Ryan (left rear) presented the latest techniques.

Some things have changed since I last learning about these techniques. Since we are anticipating a 50+ average for the VerMontreal tour, we paid careful attention to the materials on stroke, heart attack, heat problems, and sudden illness.

Two Bike Crash Day

Well, the first crash was at the corner of Pine and Maple. I had stopped to wait my turn at this 4-way stop. The guy to my left indicated that I should go before him, but I wasn't ready, so I signaled him to go. He didn't. Then he did, but not before the truck coming south had started into the intersection, in his turn. Now the courteous guy was halfway out in the intersection and I felt I could relieve him, so I pushed hard on the pedal and the chain skipped and I fell over to the right, a different side from the previous fall. A nice guy riding on the sidewalk with sandals asked if I was OK. I checked my bruises and decided I wasn't anywhere near as beat up as the crash a month ago, so I said I'm OK.

I went up to the Roxy to get my glasses case that I dropped last night when leaving after watching The Secret of Kells. It's a very nicely drawn animation. The themes follow the Book of Kells, and there are different effects for good and bad characters. The Vikings, for instance, are all 2-dimensional and black with clanky broadswords.

Eli said that the story followed the origin myth associated with the Book pretty well, including the cat with an unfamiliar name.

The second crash was not mine. It belongs to Keegan Brown, a junior at UVM who is anti-Obama. I came upon him on the Burlington path near Killarny Drive in the new north end. He had badly bruised his left knee and had a hard time walking. He had also hit his head -- no helmet -- and had a bloody contusion. I put Bactine on the open wounds while we waited for Mike Levitt, a neighbor, to bring his car to drive Keegan and his friend to the ER. When they were putting the bikes in the car I noticed that the bottom bracket was not on the bike and the crank arms were detached. What the hell happened. I found Keegan on Facebook and UVM and now I know more things about him than one would in the old non-social-networking dark ages.

I hope he is OK and that his brain isn't damaged. That's why you wear helmets.

The painted figure points to the entrance to the restricted part of the Burlington Bike Path, which is a narrow rail-with-trail, and in no was is intended for shared use by motorized vehicles.

Claude is a gentleman. He is usually quiet, responsive, happy to play, and he lets you know when he needs to go out. I took him for a ride in the Volvo to do a little shopping. He found a bungee that I had rescued and didn't know exactly why until he showed me how good it was for chewing and tearing apart. It used to have a knot where it had been torn apart. Now it doesn't.

We went for a walk a couple of hours ago, but he needed to go again. He made it very obvious by pawing my hand and then standing right by the door where the leash is hanging.

Saul and Laura come back from Mexico tomorrow, but they won't be up to retrieve the pup until the weekend. I only wish that my legs felt more like running with him in the fields and woods.

When I picked Claude up in Somervile. it rained for three days. When I stopped at Muffet's it was raining pretty hard, so we didn't go running in the woods or anything

It took a little fussing to get the harness to work correctly. Don't leave it on, because he gets his jaw caught. Claude wasn't interested in coming up stairs, so we set up his cage downstairs. He seems OK to sleep on the couch (on a towel). He chewed through a squid toy on the first day. There are pieces of black rubbery stuff all over.

He is not so keen on the food Saul and Laura left us (Science Diet) so we got some Iam's puppy kibble
He will eat a mix. I also got some classic Milkbone treats, which he will condescend to eat.

We are working out our routines. He is very polite.

Bike Crash On Burlington Path

I took a lovely bike ride with Tim Parsons and Matt Kuivinen out to Colchester Pond. On the way home, Matt and I were riding south on the Burlington Bike Path toward the small bridge between the roundhouse and the toxic waste canal. I was slightly ahead coming down the short hill running onto the bridge when I saw the kid riding northbound on the wrong side of the path, hidden by the wooden fencing. I crammed on the brakes and slowed pretty much before I hit him head-on. I unclipped my right foot but fell over to the left and hit hard. I cursed a lot. The kid was really upset. His mom came back and apologized to me and helped him deal with it. I calmed down and apologized for the foul language and gave him a hug.
He may learn the keep-to-right lesson.
The next day I had trouble walking with pain in my lower left back. There doesn't seem to be any bone break. RICE.

I have been getting good cousin vibes from the Internet through Geni, the genealogy website. They keep making improvements in how it works. For instance, they have made photos more useful. If you identify a person in a group photo by centering a rectangle on their face, Geni will automatically make that small area into the profile photo for that person. When you see the tree view you see just the face.

One drawback is that you can only identify people in your "family" defined by you, but no more than 4th cousins. I want to suggest that the range of suggested identities be determined by the placement of the "thumbtack" that Geni uses to anchor a path to a particular relative in your tree.

"You Can't Fake Good Writing"

One of the reasons I love my sister-in-law Les (Deux) Rodd is her excellent writing. After she retired from her librarian position in Oakland, she took up again her lifelong desire to write fiction.

Les met Carl Rodd (Linda's brother) through one of those Internet matchmaking services. They were considerably older than the usual couples, but their story was so compelling that they were invited to compete in some sort of reality love competition. Here is my memory of their story. Les posted her profile but fudged a bit on her age. After they actually met and fell in love, Carl said he didn't mind. You could lie about the details of your life, but you can't fake good writing.

Not so good writing.
Since I have been retired I have been working on family genealogy. My main text is my grandmother Leah Kreinik Jacobowitz's memoir, "As I Remember." She typed it on a mechanical typewriter. She must have revised it many times, although there are lots of type-overs and inserts and even some penciled in edits. I have gotten very close to her through this writing. I wouldn't say that she writes elegantly, but she is direct and emotional.

It also helps to be a good reader. Linda is a good reader. She pointed out the difference between descriptions of Leah's (Dudu) descriptions of how my grandfather Elias's father Wolf disciplined his children (never lifted a hand) and how her mother corrected her own children -- by getting on her knees and asking Leah to slap HER, because she must have been a bad mother for her daughter to have behaved so badly. This is heavy stuff.

What Linda noted was that left unsaid was how Leah's father Josef disciplined his children. I think there must have been some slaps.

I got a message from Harold Krongelb about the Hebrew middle name I added to Wolf Jacobowitz's profile.
I used one of those auto translators and got זאב‬ .
But after seeing Harold's note I used Google Translate and got הזאב . Harold says he will ask Sol.
Yup, זאב‬ Ze'ev is Hebrew for wolf. But Hebrew was reserved for holy study and Yiddish was used for mundane stuff.

Family Connections

I've been sitting home most of these late winter days. I've been keeping busy by working on genealogy through the web site Geni. My primary text is my grandmother Leah Kreinik Jacobowitz's memoir. It feels a bit like obsessing over a dead person's document sort of the way Ted Rodd perseverated on Norma Morton Rodd's Philosophy of Education.

I finally got up the energy to call Walter Jacobowitz, a second cousin. He lives in Morristown, NJ. I was afraid he would be too distant. But we had a very pleasant chat. The relationship became clear when Walter told me he and my other two cousins, Dick Brenner and Steve Tamases entered Princeton together in 1950. This was right after restrictions on Jews had been relaxed. Oh. Walter is just my older cousin. I really looked up to Dick and Steve.

Walter said he was pleased that I was doing this genealogy stuff, but there were some relatives who didn't get it. "Why do this?"

For me, it has to do with the tree structure and the ability of the computer program to map the relationships and make them clearer and to record them for posterity, when posterity get ready to be interested.

Walter remembered PopPop Elias -- how he would sit on the eastern wall of the shul and would sing out a particular Hebrew word "Bom" when it came around in the prayers. A good memory. Elias once told Walter that of all the descendents who had the name Wolf, Walter was the only one who was Wolf (Walter) Jacobowitz, just like his father. Many of us have Wolf as a middle name. You could look it up.

I also found Bernard (Bunny) Jacobowitz, who is from Wolf's brother Bernath's side of the family. Jonathan Deitch and Ellen Ruby may be interested in visiting him in Brooklyn before it is too late. Maybe Walter would like to join us.

Family Connections

I have been entering stories from Leah Kreinick Jacobowitz's memoir into Geni profiles for the people she discusses. Sometimes I can figure out the dates from her writing, but she is more interested in the emotional experience and the family ties than in the dates, The places are touchpoints for feelings.

There are a couple of relatives also on Geni who have more complete records or memories. Together we are putting together a pretty good family structure and history.

Since it's been snowing and there is a Dr Who marathon on TV, Linda and have been working on our family trees.

Mark Hammerschlag and I have been putting his sector of the family together. He sent a DVD copy of a video he took in 1993 at Aunt Ethel's birthday/reunion.

On Linda's side, we finished scanning in Ken's Lineage and have entered some of the information from Rodd grandparents' obituaries. They reveal second wives, death dates, and other information that wasn't in the printed Lineage.

This week I went to my Aunt Florence Jacobowitz's funeral. At the shiva later in Englewood, my cousin Martha Lyons presented me these tiles from the downstairs bathroom, which she found in the attic. My father put in the small bathroom in the sun-room, which he had converted from a porch. The bath was partly for Tiana, his aunt, who moved in with us for a while. Buddy & Florence closed in the windows (lower floor, left) to make the room warmer.

In late October I flew out to Albuquerque to visit my cousins Beth and Judy. Beth is 6 months older than me and Judy is about Ira's age. We timed the trip to meet Ira and his motorcycle buddies Bill Leenheer and Wayne Miller.

Beth's boys are Steve Shain and Matthew Shain. They are each married and each has a child.
Steve and Stacie are parents of Kadin, and Matt and Jeannie have Lilly. Lilly is a conscientious student. She had her books open and worked on her projects while visiting with the family. Judy helped her set up an interview with an expert on cults, which is the topic of her project.

Kadin is 11 and rides horses and ropes. He explained how he heads off the cow and ropes the head and his cousin ropes the rear legs.

The Palace Almost Kills Josh Farr

I stopped to help a young artist who was working on a set of stone etc sculptures/constructions on the Lake Champlain shore near the water treatment plant and railroad roundhouse. Josh staggered up from the lake; he was trying to place a rock high on one of the sculptures and it fell on his head. He was bleeding and was pretty disoriented. He knew he needed help.
We called 911 and the EMT folks came and checked him out.

I looked for him over the next few weeks and didn't see him. Feared the worst. But Josh had told me where he went to school, so I called the registrar and she sent him a message. He's OK.

I stopped by Tim Parsons' house on the way back from Colchester. He is back riding after separating his acromioclavicular joint (same as I did years ago). He wanted to visit the scene of his crash, so we rode down to Oakledge Park. He's taking a tree-identification course and wants to decide which trees to keep on the beach in his neighborhood. Can we identify a shag bark hickory? As a matter of fact, there is one right in Oakledge. A grand old dame. We had a visit and Tim took a twig to help identify the sample back home.

Forrest Church

Jay Gallagher, famous cancer patient, has blogged about Love & Death, a recent book by Forrest Church. Church himself recently died of cancer. He wrote about his reaction to his diagnosis from the point of view of his role as a Unitarian minister. I heard him interviewed by Terri Gross; he allowed as how he had reconciled himself to his impending death, but his wife pointed out that there were others involved who might not have arrived at that state. Jay has been writing a lot about life and death -- as well as politics, his great joy and bemusement.

Saul' company, Harmonix, makes the cover of NYTimes Magazine.

These guys have hired lots of people in the Cambridge area. Saul seems to fit right in.
He says they have given him a task and the resources to do it, and have let him at it.

I was looking at phono postcards from a link at Jess's Metafilter site.

Here were postcards that you could listen to from the early 20th century.
I believe that my dad pressed some of these that were inserted in the backs of books or other promotional materials. They were usually cheaply produced and did not bear much playing.

Kathy Lapan Camera Swap

Bob Immler, Michele Immler and their friend Kathy Lapan stayed with us on Thursday night before attempting their ride around Lake Champlain. Lou Bresee, Tim Parsons and I rode with them up toward the islands. We stopped in Colchester where Lou and I headed back.

Kathy is a school teacher in Guilford. She developed a curriculum for a one-room schoolhouse.
It turns out that Tim had been a principal in that system in the old days.

Bear the Malamute

Bruce Cunningham sent this photo of our old malamute, Bear, taken in 1981. He was a good dog. A bit aggressive, but very sweet with Linda and me. The kids had a more difficult time.

We got him from Manus (now Daniel) and Jill Pinkwater in North Carolina. His parents were Juno and Arnold. Arnold was a beautiful and quirky animal. Once we were taking care of him and he played the 'poor abused malamute' ploy by hiding under the kitchen table and complaining that we were beating the living shit out of him. I grabbed him and took him outside and had a firm discussion about appropriate malamute behavior.

Let me see if I can find a picture of these dogs.

The Burlington Free Press did a feature for Father's Day, 1980. We agreed to allow a reporter and photographer to visit our home in Winooski, where as luck would have it, Saul would soon be born.

Jan van der Ende Visits Burlington

After a 20-year electronic friendship, Jan and I finally met in person. He has worked with ASEBA materials in the Netherlands as a researcher and distributor. June 2009 was the occasion of a big ASEBA conference in Burlington, and Jan attended, along with researchers from all over the world. These are people whose names I had known, but had met only a few. I'm sorry that Linda and I were out of town for all but the last day of the conference. Jan and I took the afternoon to ride out to the "Cut" on the Colchester Causeway.

So what is the etymology of "causeway?" It has to do with heels and sheep.

Ken took me for a ride this morning. We went to the outskirts of Sycamore and then past Oak Crest, where Ted Rodd spent the end of his life.

Yesterday we took a 3 hour break in Kinderhook, MI. Linda went for a walk and I took a ride.
Since I didn't know where I was going, I called her whenever I made a turn. This turned out to be a bad idea. She was not enjoying playing support. Next time I'll do and out-and-back while she walks.

Sol Krongelb has a postcard dated December 13, 1912, from my great-grandfather Wolf Jacobowitz to his son, my grandfather Elias Jacobowitz at 7 Montgomery Street, Jersey City, NY. This is the address of the cigar store Elias managed with his brothers.

The return address is 112-14 E. 111th Street, NYC. Pretty far from the Lower East Side. The text is in Yiddish. The language is formal, in that Wolf signs his full name.
